If I had a rupee for every business owner who told me they feel like they’re supposed to be everywhere on social media but don’t have time for any of it properly — I’d have funded a few startups by now.
The pressure to be active on Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Google My Business, and whatever platform launched last month is real — and it’s exhausting. But here’s the truth: you don’t need to be everywhere. You need to be in the right place.
Let me break down the three platforms I recommend most to my clients at The Magix, and help you figure out which one deserves your energy first.
Instagram: For Brands That Communicate Visually
Instagram works best when your business has something visual to show. Design, food, photography, fashion, interior spaces, products, before-and-after transformations — anything where the work speaks for itself in an image or a short video.
For The Magix, Instagram is where I showcase design work, share quick tips, and give people a feel for my creative voice. For Ask Deepa, it’s where recipe reels live and where the community actually engages. Both work because the content is inherently visual.
If your business is primarily service-based and the work itself isn’t easily photographed — accounting, consulting, legal services — Instagram requires much more creative effort to make work. It’s not impossible, but it’s not where I’d start.
Best for: Creative services, food, retail, design, photography, hospitality, personal brands.
LinkedIn: For Businesses Selling to Other Businesses
LinkedIn is the platform that Indian B2B businesses consistently underuse. If your clients are other businesses — corporates, MSMEs, startups, professional services firms — LinkedIn is where decision-makers are spending time, and where your expertise can build genuine authority.
The content that works on LinkedIn is different from Instagram. Long-form posts that share a real insight, a client lesson, or a professional opinion consistently outperform promotional content. People on LinkedIn are there to learn and grow, not to be sold to. Lead with value, and the enquiries follow.
Best for: B2B services, professional services, consultants, agencies, corporate-facing businesses.
Google My Business: The Most Underrated Platform for Local Businesses
This is the one most businesses set up once, never touch again, and completely underestimate. A fully optimised Google My Business (GMB) profile is one of the highest-ROI digital marketing activities available to a local business — and it’s free.
When someone in Bengaluru searches “graphic designer near me” or “WordPress web design Bangalore”, Google My Business is what puts you in the map pack at the top of the results — above the organic listings. Regular posts, updated photos, collected reviews, and complete business information all improve your ranking in those local results.
If you serve clients in a specific city, GMB should be non-negotiable.
Best for: Any local business serving clients in a specific city or region.
So Which Should You Focus On?
Here’s the honest answer: start with Google My Business regardless of your business type. It’s the lowest effort, highest local impact, and completely underused by most small businesses. Then choose between Instagram and LinkedIn based on whether your primary clients are consumers or businesses.
Do one platform properly before you spread yourself across five mediocrely.
